Trump Proposes $2,000 for Everyone! "Tariff Windfall" Could Become an Inflation Bomb
U.S. President Trump recently announced on social media that he would distribute "a dividend of at least $2,000 per person" to all Americans except "high-income individuals," stating that the funds would come from tariff revenues.
On November 10 local time, the bipartisan research organization Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) pointed out that the scale and scope of the "dividend" proposed by Trump could potentially cost more than the potential revenue generated from tariffs.
Trump wrote on his social platform: "Those who oppose tariffs are fools! We are now the wealthiest and most respected country in the world, with inflation almost zero and the stock market hitting record highs."
He claimed that the United States is "collecting trillions of dollars" and will soon begin to repay the massive national debt, promising that everyone would receive a dividend of at least $2,000.
When announcing this plan, Trump did not provide specific details regarding the disbursement of funds, nor did he clearly define the criteria for "high-income individuals."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent, in an interview following Trump's announcement, attempted to explain the president's statement, saying that "the $2,000 dividend could be achieved through various forms and channels." It might not be a direct cash payment but realized through tax reduction measures such as "tax-free tips, tax-free overtime pay, tax-free social security, car loan tax deductions, etc."
Kevin Hassett, Director of the U.S. National Economic Council, stated on November 10 that the distribution plan would indeed require congressional approval.
In an email on November 10, the CRFB indicated that if these tariffs were ruled invalid, the government would need seven years to collect enough tariff revenue to fund the "dividend checks."
