Thrive Capital Partner: Tech Giants Are "Ganging Up" on OpenAI
Vince Hankes, a partner at the US venture capital firm Thrive Capital, stated that nearly all tech giants are now "ganging up" on artificial intelligence (AI) research company OpenAI.
In the "Uncapped" podcast released on Wednesday, Hankes pointed out that large tech companies do not want new competitors entering their "alliance."
"My understanding of the current competitive landscape is that OpenAI is being cornered, and every large tech company is pointing a 'bazooka' at them, wanting to take them down," Hankes said. "Because these giants don't want another new 'tech giant' to emerge."
"We should hope to see a fair and competitive environment that gives a new company a chance to break into the 'Magnificent Seven' camp. The vitality of the entire tech ecosystem comes from this kind of competition," Hankes added.
He stated, "No investment project has a higher risk-reward ratio than OpenAI, so of course we would choose it given the opportunity. But at the same time, you can't avoid taking other risks because of that."
OpenAI also released a software development kit (SDK) that allows developers to create their own applications for ChatGPT. This makes ChatGPT more like an "app store," a move considered potentially threatening to industry leaders like Apple and Google.
The agreement was signed just weeks after Nvidia announced it would provide OpenAI with 10 gigawatts of high-performance GPU computing power and committed to investing $100 billion.
