UK Intercepts 259,000 Counterfeit Toys This Year, 90% are Fake Labubu Dolls
London, October 4 (Zhongxin Net) - Reporter Ouyang Kaiyu: The UK government announced on the 4th that since the start of 2025, its border control authorities have intercepted 259,000 counterfeit toys, nearly 90% of which are imitations of the popular collectible toy, Labubu dolls.
The UK Intellectual Property Office stated that the intercepted counterfeit toys this year reveal serious safety issues. Tests showed that 75% of the seized toys failed safety tests; some contained banned carcinogenic chemicals, while others had small parts that easily detach, loose batteries, and other hazards posing choking or electrocution risks. The risks were particularly higher for toys aimed at infants and young children.
A survey by the UK Intellectual Property Office also found that 46% of consumers who had purchased counterfeit toys encountered safety problems, including toys shattering instantly, emitting toxic odors, and even causing children to develop discomfort symptoms.
Helen Barnham, Deputy Director of Enforcement at the UK Intellectual Property Office, pointed out that counterfeit toys completely bypass mandatory safety testing, and the hidden risks within their packaging could cause devastating harm to children. "Parents must not let their children become 'testers' for these dangerous products," she said.
The UK Intellectual Property Office stated that, based on interceptions, counterfeit toy production has reached industrial scale. Among the toys seized by border authorities, imitations of Labubu dolls accounted for 236,000 items, or 90% of the total. Experts said the Labubu counterfeiting case is just the tip of the iceberg, with counterfeiters targeting the full range of toy categories, covering products for all ages from infants to adolescents.
