US President Donald Trump announced a "major tariff investigation into furniture entering the United States," a move that could pave the way for imposing tariffs on specific industries.
"Within the next 50 days, this investigation will be completed, and tariffs will be imposed on furniture entering the U.S. from other countries, with the rate to be determined," Trump stated in a social media post on Friday, claiming this would revitalize domestic furniture manufacturers.
Trump did not specify the method of investigation. A U.S. official stated that the investigation is being conducted by the Department of Commerce as part of its probe into wood and wood products under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. The law allows for tariffs to be imposed on goods deemed critical to national security.
Under the law, the Secretary of Commerce must submit the findings within 270 days of launching the investigation.
Friday's announcement adds to the growing list of industries targeted for tariffs. The Department of Commerce is already studying the possibility of imposing tariffs on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, aircraft, critical minerals, and medium-duty trucks.
