Survey Shows Significant Increase in AI Usage in Germany

A survey released on the 26th by the German Technical Oversight Association reveals that the number of Germans using generative artificial intelligence has increased significantly in recent years. However, many people have insufficient awareness of the risks associated with this technology.

On the occasion of the third anniversary of the U.S.-based OpenAI's release of the chatbot ChatGPT, the association commissioned the Forsa Institute for Public Opinion Research to conduct a survey on the use of generative AI among 1,005 people. The results show that over the past three years, it has become increasingly integrated into the daily lives of Germans, with 65% of respondents having used it, compared to 53% last year and 37% the year before.

Regarding usage frequency, approximately 45% of users employ AI weekly, while 12% use it daily. The usage rate is particularly high among the younger generation: 91% of people aged 16 to 29 use AI tools in their daily lives, with 55% using them weekly.

In terms of market share, ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Microsoft's Copilot rank in the top three. DeepL, which started as a translation software, ranks fourth.

As for application scenarios, approximately 72% of users use AI to search for information, which is 24 percentage points higher than a year ago; 43% use it for text processing; 38% use it to seek inspiration; and 34% use AI for translation.

Regarding the authenticity of AI-generated content, 51% of respondents take AI-generated content as genuine, especially video content; 91% find it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and fake.

Additionally, 83% of respondents are concerned that AI will lead to the wider spread of misinformation; 83% support implementing regulatory measures for AI applications; and 89% believe that AI-generated content should be clearly labeled.
