ECB President Lagarde: Veto Mechanism Puts "Fragile" EU in a Predicament

Xinhua Finance, Beijing, October 30 – European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has again called for reforming the EU's decision-making mechanism, advocating for the use of majority voting to enhance the Union's operational efficiency.

"Even when we can agree on a course of action, the current governance system often prevents us from making decisive decisions," Lagarde said during a speech in Florence, Italy, on Wednesday. "The existing system has become too slow and complex, overly held hostage by the veto power of individual member states."

She specifically emphasized that "the solution does not require revolutionary change." "We can use the 'passerelle clause' in the EU treaties to make decisions by qualified majority rather than unanimity on matters of common interest," Lagarde's remarks continue her longstanding reform advocacy.
