Trump: U.S. Could Import Argentine Beef to Lower Domestic Meat Prices

U.S. President Trump stated on the 19th that the United States could import Argentine beef to lower domestic beef prices.

While speaking to reporters aboard the presidential aircraft "Air Force One," Trump said, "We will buy some beef from Argentina. If we do this, it could help bring down domestic beef prices."

According to the Associated Press, U.S. domestic beef prices have remained high for several consecutive months, primarily due to drought and reduced imports from Mexico. Concerned about the spread of screwworm infestations in Mexican livestock to the United States, the U.S. suspended imports of live cattle, horses, and bison from Mexico starting May 11. Imports briefly resumed in July but were quickly suspended again after a new case of livestock infection was reported in Mexico.

Earlier this month, the United States announced the direct purchase of Argentine pesos and finalized a $20 billion currency swap framework agreement with the Central Bank of Argentina. However, during a meeting with visiting Argentine President Milei at the White House on the 14th, Trump stated that if Milei fails to win the congressional midterm elections on the 26th of this month, the U.S. will cease financial support to Argentina. Multiple media analyses suggest that these remarks indicate the Trump administration's intention to intervene in Argentina's domestic elections to boost the chances of victory for Milei's ruling coalition.
