OpenAI and AMD have announced a collaboration worth tens of billions of dollars to jointly develop AI data centers based on AMD processors, marking the most direct challenge to industry leader NVIDIA to date. Under the terms of the agreement, AMD will supply hundreds of thousands of AI chips to OpenAI over a four-year period, with the latter set to begin purchasing MI450 chips starting next year. OpenAI will either purchase these chips directly or through its cloud computing partners. Additionally, OpenAI has secured warrants from AMD, allowing it to acquire up to 10% of the chipmaker's shares at $0.01 per share. AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that this deal will generate tens of billions of dollars in new revenue for the chip company over the next five years.
