US Agrees to Hold Tariff Consultations with Brazil

On the 18th local time in Geneva, the WTO website published a letter from the United States. According to the content of the letter, the US has accepted Brazil's request for consultations regarding the "US imposition of up to 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods."

The letter was dated August 15 and made public by the WTO on the 18th. In the letter, the US stated that some of Brazil's claims involve "national security" and are not subject to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism, while both parties will further negotiate to determine the date for consultations. Previously, Brazil had requested consultations with the WTO on August 5, and the consultation letter was made public by the WTO on the 11th.

According to the executive order issued by the US government on July 30, the US began imposing an additional 40% ad valorem tariff on products imported from Brazil starting August 6. This means that, on top of the so-called "reciprocal tariff" executive order issued by the US in April, the tariff rate for most Brazilian products exported to the US has increased to 50%, including meats, coffee, fruits, and others.
