Fierce Fighting in Krasnohorivka: Russia Claims Strikes on Ukrainian Positions, Ukraine Says It Repelled 35 Russian Attacks
Recently, Russian and Ukrainian forces have been engaged in intense battles near the strategic town of Krasnohorivka (known as Pokrovsk in Ukraine) in the Donetsk region. On the 11th, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces had struck Ukrainian troops in the area, while the Ukrainian General Staff stated that it had taken measures to counter Russian assault groups attempting to infiltrate.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported on the 11th that its "Center" group of forces had targeted Ukrainian positions in Krasnohorivka and other parts of the Donetsk region. The ministry released footage showing the use of rocket artillery to strike Ukrainian strongholds, ensuring the advance of Russian assault units. The video also depicted Russian forces ambushing Ukrainian drones in the Krasnohorivka direction.
The Ukrainian General Staff stated that, as of 22:00 that night, Russian forces had launched 35 attacks in the Pokrovsk direction, deploying assault teams in an attempt to breach Ukrainian frontline defenses. The Ukrainian military has decided to deploy additional troops and implement measures to detect and neutralize Russian assault groups. Videos released by Ukraine’s "Omega" Special Forces (under the National Guard) and the 68th Jaeger Brigade showed Ukrainian forces using drones to target Russian soldiers near Pokrovsk.
Earlier, in late July, Russian media cited security sources reporting clashes in the southern and southwestern outskirts of Krasnohorivka. Ukrainian media later quoted military sources stating that Pokrovsk had not yet been encircled.
Krasnohorivka (Pokrovsk in Ukraine) had a pre-war population of around 61,000 and was a key coal industry hub and logistical node for Ukrainian forces, with multiple railways and highways passing through. Reuters cited military analysts as saying that while the town’s significance as a military supply center has diminished for Ukraine, losing it could open a gateway for further Russian advances in the region.
