US Media Reports "Trump-Putin Meeting" Will Not Discuss Russia-Ukraine Territorial Division
NBC News reported on the 13th that US President Trump stated during a video conference with European leaders that his meeting with Russian President Putin on the 15th would "not discuss any possible territorial division issues." Ukrainian President Zelensky participated in the video conference.
The report cited two European officials and three other informed sources, stating that Trump also mentioned during the conference that the goal of the meeting was "to ensure a ceasefire in Ukraine."
The report noted that both Trump and European leaders agreed that a ceasefire in Ukraine must be achieved before Russia-Ukraine peace talks can proceed. Some European leaders came away from the video conference with the impression that Trump was not optimistic about the meeting yielding results.
Separately, Politico quoted three informed sources as reporting that Trump told European and Ukrainian leaders during the video conference that if a ceasefire agreement were reached, the US would be willing to provide Ukraine with security guarantees in some form, albeit with certain conditions—one being that such guarantees would not fall under the NATO framework. The report added that Trump did not specify the details of the security guarantees, only discussing "broader concepts."
Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet on the 15th in Alaska, USA. On the 13th, at the urging of German Chancellor Merz, leaders from European countries such as Germany, France, and the UK, as well as NATO, the EU, and Zelensky, held a video conference with Trump.
